COLOMBIAN owners of a Machynlleth-based accommodation who supported people in the Dyfi Valley throughout the Covid-19 pandemic are fundraising to help those suffering in their native country.

Javier Sanchez and Maria de la Pava, of Braich Goch Inn in Corris, are appealing for funds to help those suffering financially because of the impact of the pandemic in the city of Cali, Colombia.

In the South American country, Covid-19 continues to spread and is having a significant impact on the economy, pushing people into financial uncertainty and in some cases, poverty.

Maria and Javier offered support for local people in the valley during lockdown in Wales, and now want to do all they can to offer support to those in Colombia too.

She said: “When we went into lockdown, we wanted to do something to support local families isolating and those struggling due to loss of income.

“We assembled a team of volunteer chefs, contacted local growers, and put together a menu from the ingredients available here in the Dyfi Valley.

“I know [the situation in Colombia] can seem like a distant problem to people here, but every time we enjoy a cup of coffee or a banana for breakfast, we are connected to the people of Colombia.

“We benefit from their hard work. Now, in this time of crisis, they really need our support.”

The couple offered hot, nutritious dinners at affordable prices, and for free to those who were furloughed.

People in Cali are currently protesting against state violence and poverty, with shortages of food and petrol supplies.

By fundraising, Maria and Javier hope to help those living in the region by supporting a collective on the ground which is purchasing fresh produce from farms and delivering it to those living in the city.

People in Cali have been injured during the protests after clashes with security forces. The BBC reported on Thursday that 42 people had died during the protests.

Protests were sparked by a tax reform, which has since been suspended – but people of Colombia are continuing to protest by calling for real justice and reforms on health, education and the pension system.
