The Llanidloes Covid-19 Support Group helpline will cease to operate from Saturday, May 15, following the successful vaccination rollout to vulnerable groups and the end of shielding in April.

Volunteers have taken more than 1,300 phonecalls and carried out more than 2,000 deliveries to people who needed support during lockdowns in the past 14 months.

Deputy mayor Jamie Jones was one of many residents to congratulate the volunteer group for its support during the pandemic.

He said: “Fabulous effort by all involved. Brought out the very best in our town.”

While Pam Mills added: “Not only have you been such a practical support but have lifted so many spirits to know that there is so much goodness and care and friendship in our community.”

“Our volunteers have been amazing, giving their time and fuel costs to keep others safe,” said Clare Bound, a trustee of Llanidloes Covid-19 Support Group.

“The majority of groups in Powys that set up like ours, closed their services last August 2020 when the shielding groups came to an end after the first wave of the pandemic.

“We felt though it was important to remain open until people were offered a vaccine and could feel more confident about going out for themselves.

“I would like to express our sincere thanks and heartfelt gratitude to all the call handlers, volunteers and everyone who has pulled together in an extremely difficult time to support everyone in our local area, your actions have truly made a difference.

“Out of such an awful time, there has been lots of positives too, the town and surround area really came together to help and support each other. We have seen cross generational relationships built and flourish.”
