Mountain bike riders have been told to stop digging dirt jumps in Newtown's green spaces as the problem is "getting out of hand".

Open Newtown, an organisation that looks after the town's green spaces, said that they and the police have received a number of reports over the last month.

They have since issued a plea to local riders to stop digging at the Castle Mound, Trehafren Hill and Vaynor Fields.

Open Newtown said: "Notice to our local mountain bike riders, stop digging up our green spaces. It’s getting out of hand. You’re damaging landscape, wildlife habitats and an ancient monument.

"Take your spades home please.

"We created a one-mile long blue line MTB (mountain bike) trail for you all, at great expense. Use what has been built already.

"Stop creating black lines. They’re dangerous for anyone who isn’t as confident and experienced as you are."

Open Newtown added that further incidents will "not be tolerated" and will become a "police matter immediately from now on".
