The finalists for the first ever Montgomeryshire Community Awards has been revealed.

After some exceptionally high, and some difficult decisions made by the judges, the panel have put forward a list of inspirational community heroes.

The awards recognise people who have “gone above and beyond” during the coronavirus pandemic.

The judges were overwhelmed by the standard of the entries, with nominations representing people from all age groups and all walks of life.

These are the finalists who are now in the running for an award:

Young Person of the Year

Business of the Year

  • Maldwyn Nursery and Family Centre
  • Phoenix Homecare and Support
  • Lewis Llandrinio

Key Worker of the Year

  • Amy Coyle
  • Mrs B Evans
  • Jane Rees

Volunteer of the Year

  • Duncan Borthwick
  • Leon Shearer
  • Roger Breese

Community Group of the Year

  • Aberhafesp Young Farmers Club and Gemma Owen
  • Walking Newtown
  • Powys Covid-19 Vaccination Volunteers

The judges Craig Williams MP, Yasmin Bell (Chief Executive Officer of Citizens Advice Powys), Angela Owen (Head of Internal Services with Powys Association of Voluntary Services), Thom Kennedy (Editor of Powys County Times) and Paul Hawthorn (co-Founder of the Awards) will now choose a winner and two highly commended entries for each category.

The winners will be rewarded with prizes sponsored by Charlies Stores, Express Cafe, Iceland, CellPath, and M.P. Foulkes which will be announced during a livestreamed awards ceremony on the Montgomeryshire Community Awards Facebook page and Craig Williams MP’s Facebook page at 7pm on Friday, May 21.
