Building work of Newtown's new Aldi store is continuing as the discount retailer prepares to open for business this year.
The supermarket is being built on the site of a former car dealership on Pool Road, joining other chains such as Tesco, Morrisons and Lidl within the town.
An exact opening date for the supermarket has yet to be confirmed, but Aldi has said it expects it to be open for business in 2021.
The construction of the 1,332 square metre store, which includes more than 100 car parking spaces, got underway after planning permission was granted in August 2020.
Aldi held a public consultation in Newtown during 2019 and said that they were happy there was a desire to bring a store to the town.
According to the company, more than 81 per cent of respondents supported the proposals, with many saying the store would be good for Newtown and the economy, creating more jobs in the community and reducing travel times for customers in Newtown who currently travel further afield, such as Welshpool, to complete their weekly shop.
A spokesperson for Aldi said: "“Whilst preparing for this application, we were shocked to discover that £9 million of spending currently leaves Newtown every year. We know that customers currently travel out of Newtown to nearby Aldi stores in locations such as Welshpool, and we hope that a new community store in the town will reduce travel times and help keep trade local.”
