A MAN has been arrested in connection with a serious sexual assault that took place in Lampeter on Thursday night.

Dyfed Powys Police first released a statement on the evening of May 6, warning local residents not to stop and pick up a male who they believed might be attempting to hitchhike out of the area.

This morning, the force said a 45-year-old man had been arrested.

Detective Inspector Adam Cann, of Dyfed Powys Police, said: “Following a large police presence and search in the Lampeter area last night a 45-year-old male was this morning arrested in connection with a serious sexual assault.

“Specialist officers are supporting the victim at this time. Dedicated detectives are dealing with the suspect in custody.

“We would like to thank the public for their support and understanding as the search was conducted, with significant sightings and leads helping officers locate the suspect in a timely manner.”

There had been a large police presence in the Forest Road area on Thursday night as a search for the suspect was conducted. Police had warned the man could attempt to hitchhike, with members of the public being warned not to stop for anyone on the side of the road at this time.

“Road checks are also being carried out on the A485, south of Llangeitho, in connection to the search,” police tweeted.

“The man is thought to be wearing a khaki coat, and dark green trousers. If anyone sees the man, they are asked not to approach him but to report it to police by calling 999.”
