A NEWTOWN man has been banned from the road after admitting drug driving.

Joe Phillip Hans Sweatman, 24, of Chapel Street, Newtown, pleaded guilty to the offence when he appeared at Welshpool Magistrates Court.

Helen Tench, prosecuting, said police stopped Sweatman’s vehicle in Chapel Street, Newtown on October 27. Officers noticed his eyes were glazed and could smell cannabis.

When tested for the drug he was found to have 16 micrograms per litre of blood. The legal limit is 2.

Robert Hanratty, defending, said: “He has learned the risk of the occasional use of a Class B drug.”

Chair of the magistrates bench Dr Rachel Jones gave Sweatman a £166 fine, and banned him from driving for 12 months.

He will also pay £85 costs and a £34 victim surcharge.
