Plaid Cymru Senedd election candidate Elwyn Vaughan has pledged to support a community council's attempts to shake-up planned changes to roads around Llanidloes.

Llanidloes Without Community Council clerk Shirley Lewis had written to Mr Vaughan, as well as fellow election candidate Russell George, calling for more laybys and passing places on the A470 between Llanidloes and Newtown, and highlighting concerns with plans to introduce an overtaking lane on the A470.

The letter reads: "The proposed road to Llanidloes Rugby club is not suitable for two way traffic as residents park their vehicles on the side of the road making it a single lane and this road is very popular with residents walking, taking their dogs etc down to the rugby club via the walkway. The entrance to this road is not suitable for the level of traffic that this proposal as set out with poor visibility and access from the road into Llanidloes.

"Regarding the third lane at Llanidloes, at present it is not an urgent issue, at the moment as a small improvement to the safety of the lower roundabout it needs better visibility on the approach from the Llangurig side and a 40 mph limit on the Newtown side from the roundabout to the other side of the entrance to the Rugby Club which will help safety issues.

"Regarding Llangurig, we don’t see any issues there a present but Bwlchgarreg corner has been needing improvements for years and is a real safety issue.

"In contrast the main road from Llanidloes to Ponterwyd is having a speed limit of 50 mph along its length which it makes it far safer than the road to Llanidloes. This is a contradiction surely. This is one of the main roads from the Midlands to the coast, and what an easy way to save money on road improvements. Central Wales deserves and needs a proper road connection between North and South Wales which would improve the viability of our businesses and tourism industry."

In response Mr Vaughan wrote: "I very much welcome the comments from the community council and totally agree with them. Whatever happens with the election. I will ensure that any regional Plaid Cymru Senedd member or Minister will work with you to ensure that any developments reflect the priorities you highlight."
