Tributes have poured in from across Powys and mid Wales to the Duke of Edinburgh who has died aged 99.

Local politicians and dignitaries offered their tributes to Prince Philip following today's announcement from Buckingham Palace.

Lord Lieutenant of Powys Tia Jones said: "It is with great sadness to hear of the death of HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, a great loss to Her Majesty & The Royal Family as well as to the country after so many years of dedicated service.”

Powys County Council said that its Chairman Cllr Gwynfor Thomas has written to the Queen expressing the county's "great sadness" following the death of HRH The Duke of Edinburgh.

Flags have been lowered to half-mast at County Hall, in Llandrindod Wells, Neuadd Maldwyn, in Welshpool, Ladywell House, Newtown and Neuadd Brycheiniog, Brecon as a mark of respect, the council added.

Montgomeryshire Senedd Member Russell George said his thoughts are with the Queen and the Royal Family.

"Prince Philip had a remarkable life and was dedicated to public service over many decades," he said.

"In particular, The Duke of Edinburgh programme helped so many young people."

Montgomeryshire MP Craig Williams said he was "incredibly saddened" by the news.

He said: "Deeply Saddened to hear about the passing of HRH Prince Philip.

"He led a lifelong commitment to this country. Serving during the Second World War, then as Duke of Edinburgh, becoming patron of many charities and causes, most famously of course, the Duke of Edinburgh Awards.

"My deepest condolences to HM The Queen and the whole family, he will be missed."

Brecon and Radnorshire MP Fay Jones said: "I am really saddened to hear this news. His Royal Highness has served this country with distinction for many years. May he rest in peace.

"My thoughts are with Her Majesty The Queen and The Royal Family at this awful time."

Following today’s announcement from Buckingham Palace, the First Minister of Wales, Mark Drakeford offered condolences to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the Royal family on behalf of the Welsh Government.

He said: “It is with sadness that we mourn the death of His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh. Throughout his long and distinguished life, he served the crown with selfless devotion and generosity of spirit.

"We offer our sincere condolences to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, his children and their families on this sad occasion.

"He will be missed by the many organisations that he supported as Patron or President over many decades of service”.

While Liberal Democrat candidate William Powell described the Duke as a "steadfast servant of Great Britain for 70+ years".

The Conservative's Mid and West Wales Regional candidate Tomos Davies said: "I am deeply saddened by the news His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Earl of Merioneth, has passed away.  

"Thoughts and prayers with Her Majesty the Queen, who has today lost her liege man of life and limb."

Abolish the Welsh Assembly candidate Claire Mills said that it was a "great personal sadness".

She said: "I was privileged to have met Prince Philip on a number of occasions, he truly was a wonderful and inspirational gentleman."

In a statement, Mayor of Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Cllr David Selby said: "It is with great sorrow that we learn of the death of the Duke of Edinburgh.

"The Town Council, on behalf of the residents of Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn, offer our sincere condolences to Her Majesty the Queen and the rest of the Royal Family at this sad time."
