The Conservative Party has unveiled its wish list of projects for Mid Wales should it win May's Senedd elections.

The party has published a "Mid Wales recovery plan".

Among the projects it has highlighted is a £50 million package of upgrades to the A470 through the region, "new and upgraded hospitals", and a "Tourism Towns Fund" which it says will deliver free WiFi and better transport links to tourist towns.

It also wants to "revive the Royal Welsh Agricultural Show" with a comeback support package after the major event was cancelled in successive years because of the pandemic.

National pledges which could also impact the region include spending £250 million on potholes, scrapping the nitrate vulnerable zone regulations introduced recently, and working with the Home Office to set up a "National Rural Crime Taskforce for Wales".

The Welsh Conservatives’ lead regional candidate for Mid & West Wales, Tomos Dafydd Davies, said: “Mid Wales is an incredibly special region, blessed with thriving businesses and communities, and a proud people.

"We need a Government that will relentlessly focus on growing the economy from the wreckage of Covid – and that is precisely what the Welsh Conservatives will do, starting right here in Mid Wales.

"Our recovery plan will turbo-charge the Mid Wales economy, investing in vital upgrades to the A470, abolishing damaging NVZ regulations which threaten our farmers, supporting our hoteliers and hospitality businesses to recover through our Tourism Town Fund, as well as cutting business rates for small businesses – the lifeblood of our market towns and rural economy."

The Welsh Conservative Shadow Minister for Mid Wales, Russell George, said: “May’s Senedd election is the most important in a generation. The pandemic has put Mid Wales at a crossroads – and as the vaccine rolls out, the election will decide which road we take.

“We can’t risk more of the same by continuing with a tired, clapped-out Labour Party propped up by their little helpers, continually breaking promises to the communities of Mid Wales such as the introduction of draconian NVZ rules that will devastate many rural businesses.

“Welsh Conservatives will deliver change and build a better Wales with a dedicated recovery plan for families, workers and businesses across Mid Wales.

“We’ll open up Mid Wales with a rural road fund and investment in the A470, we’ll scrap the draconian NVZs, we’ll boost local economies by launching a Tourism Towns Fund, as well as ensure the Royal Welsh Agricultural Show is better than it has ever been by introducing a support package.”
