There are some aspects of life that even a lockdown could never delay.

But the new mums of Powys found that some of the most precious aspects of becoming a parent were denied to them.

Lucy Owen of Newtown celebrated the birth of a son just before the start of the first lockdown.

She said: “Ronnie was born on February 4, 2020 – just weeks before the first lockdown.

“We have spent the best part of a year at home. Although I have enjoyed every minute of him I feel we have missed out on so much.

“Parent and baby groups, days out with friends and family get togethers. We celebrated Ronnie’s first birthday as a family. Myself, my husband and Ronnie which felt really sad at first but we had a special days filled with lots of lovely memories to share when he’s older.”

Proud mum Xara added: “As you can imagine it’s a crazy time to have a baby let alone twins, during times that could never have been imagined they have brought so much happiness and love into our lives.”

Laura Land of Shropshire celebrated the birth of Elis Land at Telford Hospital.

Laura said: “Being pregnant, having a baby and being on maternity leave over this last year has been tough and we have often felt very isolated.

“We long for the days when Elis can finally get to know our family and friends, especially our 89 year old ‘Dadcu’ who he has only ever met through a window.

“As tough as things were at times, Elis and his big Brothers Steffan and Will have been our absolute rays of sunshine in this storm and we couldn’t have got through it without them.”

Hannah Wilke from Crossgates gave birth to Maggie Rose Parker on April 17.

She said: “It was extremely worrying time for me. At home listening to the news and all the uncertainty. Everything seemed so bleak and I was bringing a new baby into it.

“The worst part was having to be in hospital on my own. With my previous pregnancies my partner could stay with me day and night. This time I had to be dropped off at the front doors. My partner was only to be there when I had started labour. That was worrying also because Hereford is an hour away and I did think he might not make it in time. Luckily he did, only able to stay with us for an hour after the birth.

“The worst impact for me though was Maggie not being able to meet close family and friends so none of the usual newborn excitement. No cuddles from cousins, auntie and uncle and my close friends. Friends did get to meet her over Zoom.

“Also challenging was being at home with a newborn and home schooling. My partner being a key worker had to go back to work when Maggie was six days old so it was left all left to me.

“Now nearly 11 months after her birth, I feel she has definitely missed out socially. She has never seen any children of her own age, experienced swimming or any soft play areas. Her highlight is going to Tesco where she gets so excited to see people.

“I will be going back to work soon. So she will be nearly a year old and hopefully have some normality when she starts with a child minder.”

Nathan Jones of Newtown said: “We were sent up on the March 3, 2021 and for Lucy to be induced in to labour, things didn’t go to plan at the time so we were pushed back and the doctors were trying to find a solution for the baby to be delivered.

“So we were up there for five days in total and there are no visiting times. I was able to see Lucy on three occasions so she could get some fresh air.

“Wrexham Hospital were amazing but very short staffed within the doctors and nurses. Masks to be worn at all times and during birth also but not for Lucy.”

Albert Kenneth Jones was born on March 8.

Rachel Thomas of Cilmery gave birth to Ivy Florence Williams on January 19, 2021.

Rachel said: “After falling pregnant during the 2020 lockdown we honestly didn’t think we’d still be in a lockdown situation when our baby was born in January 2021.

“Although it’s been hard not being able to properly introduce our little girl to family and friends one positive of lockdown has meant we’ve had lots of time to enjoy at home as a new family of three.”

We sadly last my mother-in-law to cancer in August 2020 so our little girl really was the sunshine among the sadness. We already have a beautiful almost two year old, Ella Gwenllian Jones.”

Jessica Pugh of Churchstoke gave birth to daughter Lexi Broomfield at Telford Hospital on January 13, 2021.

Jessica said: “Being pregnant in the pandemic was a lot harder mentally more then anything.

“I had to go to my appointments on my own, we were lucky that my partner was able to come in to the 12 week and 20 week scan.

“I have a two year old son and the two pregnancies were completely different as I didn’t have the contact or support like the first.

“My little girl is growing so fast and it’s so hard because she’s got so many family members she hasn’t had the chance to meet.”
