About 16,000 chickens have been killed in a fire at a farm near Llanfair Caereinion.

Firefighters were called to the fire in a large free range egg production shed at around 11.26pm on Thursday (March 25).

Crews from Llanfair Caereinion, Welshpool, Newtown, Montgomery, Llanfyllin, Llanidloes and Llandrindod Wells battled flames for several hours and were able to stop the fire from spreading to another shed containing 16,000 chickens.

The cause of the fire is "undetermined", said Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service (MAWWFRS).

Llanfair Caereinion Fire Station tweeted: "Overnight Llanfair crew were called to a fire at a large poultry shed.

"Shed well alight on arrival and incident quickly made up to six pumps and a water bowser.

"Crews were able to stop fire from spreading to second shed but first was sadly beyond saving."

The agricultural shed measured 20 meters by 80 meters and contained approximately 16,000 poultry

"Through the great efforts of the crews, an adjacent building, also containing approximately 16,000 poultry, was undamaged," a MAWWFRS spokesperson said.

"Firefighters sectorised the incident into two sectors and extinguished the fire using two main jets and four high pressure hose reels.

"Road traffic collision spreaders, small tools and a thermal imaging camera were also used during the incident."

Fire crews left the incident at 3.57am on Friday (March 26).
