POLICE have warned Powys motorists they will continue to crackdown on drug drivers.

Inspector Jonathan Rees-Jones of Dyfed-Powys Police says drug-driving is a problem 365 days a year in Powys with people who drive after taking drugs a risk to themselves and others.

He said: "Since the drug drive legislation came in years ago, there has been a notable increase in the amount of drug drive arrests taking place particularly around Powys which is concerning.

"The test is a mouth swab. If we suspect the manner of driving, or the driver is under the influence of a particular drug, the officers will use a mouth swab.

"If it shows positive on the swab itself they get arrested and brought into custody. It is highly effective."

Insp Rees-Jones warned motorists that even if they have taken a substance the night before, a few days earlier, it can still be in your system even if you feel you are fit to drive.

He added: "Many people driving around have perhaps consumed drugs the night before and then decide to drive in the morning or the following day and it's still in the system.

"People shouldn't be doing drugs and certainly then they shouldn't be driving if under the influence of drugs, likewise drink.

"There is a high proportion of those caught drug driving in court throughout the year. We tend to see an increase in drink driving during the summer or Christmas time which is why we have those campaigns, but you see drug driving quite regularly unfortunately.
