As part of a grant from The Welsh Government through the Powys Teaching Health Board, supported by PAVO and Powys County Council, the DPJ foundation is delivering free online Mental Health Awareness sessions in English or Welsh for those living and working in agriculture in Powys.

This will be followed by six free on-line wellbeing and self-care sessions. The aim is to help the agricultural community cope with the additional stresses and strains caused by the Covid 19 pandemic.

The sessions will give confidence to those living and working in agricultural communities, to look out for each other and use their skills to get support to those who need it following a year like no other which has impacted farming communities.

The training has been planned for farmers and their families or anyone in a work or volunteering role who comes in to contact with the farming community.

This can include vets, agricultural suppliers, auctioneers, statutory agencies, teachers, charities and local businesses.

The training looks at:

  • How to spot the signs of someone struggling with their mental health
  • What to do when you spot these signs
  • Suicide awareness
  • Encouraging somebody to access help and knowing what help is available
  • Looking after your own mental health

Previous participants of the course have said: “I definitely feel better prepared and more confident in approaching the subject of mental health both professionally and personally”

“Mental health is out there, we all know about it, but don’t know how to talk about it. This training really helped me understand it more, and be more confident and careful on how to approach it, to talk about it, to help someone.”

The sessions are three and a half hours long and take place in March and April. Each participant will get a resource pack sent out to them following the training.

The foundation will also be offering 6 free on-line wellbeing sessions in April and May, including relaxation and mindfulness, improving sleep, Dru Yoga, coping with stress and anxiety and understanding counselling.

These will give people an opportunity to try something new to support their wellbeing.

Currently available for booking are sessions in English on March 23 and 29, and in Welsh on April 6 and 14.
