THE return of golf across Wales has been hailed.

The Welsh Government confirmed golf clubs would soon reopen as part of its phased plan to ease social distancing restrictions.

James Evans, Conservative Senedd Candidate said: "With Covid rates dropping nationally it is long overdue to bring some ‘normality’ back into our lives.

"Whilst there is evidence that indoor exercising pose a risk of infection without the mitigations being in place, there is minimal evidence of transmission outdoors and the restrictions on driving for outdoor exercise seem excessive.

"Golf courses opened in the summer last year with limitations on club house activities and the system worked very well.

"In the summer of 2020, our golf courses have seen an uptake in new members both young and old and the exercise that golf provides have significant positive impacts on people’s physical and mental health and well being.

“I am delighted that the Welsh Labour Government have finally seen sense and re-opened our golf courses and other outdoor sports. Sport, keeping active and being outdoors has such a beneficial impact on both physical and mental health”.

Meanwhile Simon Edwards, Golf Professional at Builth Wells Golf Club also praised the decision.

He said: “This is fantastic news that we can get back on the golf course. Thank you to Golf Wales and James Evans for calling for this restriction to be lifted more than four weeks ago.

"Golf is a very safe activity that takes place fresh air and with spring approaching, we all need to get outside more.”
