Newtown’s popular annual carnival has been cancelled for the second year running amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Every June crowds gather to watch as floats and people dressed in costumes parade through the town.

However, organisers of Newtown Carnival said they have decided to postpone the event this year.

In a statement, the carnival committee said: “At last it seems there may be light at the end of the tunnel. However, keeping in line with national events, the carnival committee has taken the difficult decision to postpone this year’s carnival again.

“We are really sad not to be able to go ahead but feel it is the responsible thing to do. We could never forgive ourselves if there was to be a spike in cases due to carnival.

“We would also be greatly hampered in our fundraising events with social distancing. We know how disappointing this is, but we need to ensure everyone’s safety.

“We have spoken with other local events who are taking the same approach. We are grateful for your continued support and understanding.”

Newtown Mayor Cllr David Selby described the news as “sad but understandable in current circumstances”.
