More than 12,500 people have received a Covid-19 vaccine within five weeks at Newtown's Maldwyn Leisure Centre.

Freedom Leisure, which runs the sports centre, said up to 1,036 doses were being delivered in just one day.

Gwyn Owen, area manager, said: “It`s been an honour to work with our Powys partners and such a dedicated team as the Covid-19 vaccine is rolled out across north Powys.

"My thanks to everyone involved, who on a daily basis are making such a positive difference to all our lives in Powys.”

The sports centre is one of three mass vaccination sites based in Powys that has helped vaccine the county's most vulnerable residents since January.

To support the roll-out of the vaccine Powys Freedom Leisure employees are supporting the clinical staff from Powys Teaching Health Board on site, along with PAVO volunteers and the armed forces.

PAVO chief executive Carl Cooper said volunteers and staff have "achieved and continue to achieve are nothing short of inspirational and very humbling",

Carol Shillabeer, chief executive of Powys Teaching Health Board said: “One of the many wonderful things about Powys is the way in which different organisations come together in partnership. This vaccination programme has been a real testament to what can be achieved when we work together. The health board is extremely grateful for the support of Freedom Leisure to enable us to bring Covid-19 vaccination to so many people so quickly.”
