BERRIEW Recreation Association has condemned the use of its facilities for 'an unofficial football match.'

A spokesman for the association said via Facebook: "Berriew Recreation Association were very disappointed to learn that despite the current lockdown provisions, a large number of individuals congregated on their main pitch last Saturday afternoon in order to play an unofficial football match."

Berriew Football Club also spoke of its frustrations and the damage to the Talbot Field surface.

A spokesman said: "It is frustrating that the individuals felt it appropriate to play a football match during a time when the vast majority of the public are making huge sacrifices and abiding by the lockdown measures.

"Not only that, the weather last week was atrocious and they have caused considerable damage to the pitch."

Meanwhile junior club spokesman Paul Inns urged people to use the club's new pitch when lockdown restrictions were eased.

He said: "This is very sad to have to report I’m afraid. There’s nothing to suggest it was any of our juniors who were involved.

"We certainly don’t wish to discourage people from using our facilities - when lockdown is lifted.

"However if anyone wants a kick about, can they please use the new pitch rather than the main pitch and take into consideration the weather conditions."
