A CHURCH in Newtown has delivered hundreds of Sunday lunches for vulnerable people and families across the town throughout the coronavirus crisis.

All Saints Church in Commercial Street has been serving 80 hot meals every Sunday since the first lockdown in March.

The weekly delivery, in association with Newtown Network, is for families and individuals who refer themselves or are referred by the town’s foodbank, district nurses or the mental health team.

To support it through the ongoing coronavirus lockdown, Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council has granted £2,000 to the church through its community grant fund.

The vicar of All Saints, Canon Revd Nia Wyn Morris said: “Thank you sincerely to our Mayor David Selby and all Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council members for the generous cheque we received this month towards the Sunday lunches.

“We represent so many more people who work hard behind the scenes in our community.

“Diolch yn fawr iawn Rhiain and David, the Town Council and all involved with activities and services to help one another in our community at this strange and difficult time.

“I pray that we will see better times as a community and nation”.

Newtown Mayor Cllr David Selby said: “All Saints Church working with the Newtown Network has demonstrated a wonderful commitment in providing a regular Sunday lunch at home for those who find it difficult to provide their own.

"Well done those in the kitchen and those who deliver to the homes. The Town Council grant will pay for the service whilst lockdown continues.”

Another community group, Creative Stuff Newtown, has also benefited from the community grant fund. £500 will be used for four online workshops and live event to tackle continuing lockdown isolation by offering young people opportunities to engage in online DJ sessions.
