Plans to merge two schools in Llanfair Caereinion have taken another step forward after a statutory notice was issued by Powys Council.

The authority's cabinet last week vowed to press ahead with the plans, which would see a new all-age school established in Llanfair, by closing the County Primary School and Caereinion High School.

The new site is expected to open in September 2022.

Members of the public now have 28 days to submit any objections that they have about the proposals to the council.

Cllr Phyl Davies, cabinet member for education and property, said: “We are committed to delivering an improved learner offer for the children and young people in Powys through our Strategy for Transforming Education in Powys. I believe that our proposal for the schools in Llanfair Caereinion will benefit both pupils and teaching staff.

“However, it is important that cabinet hears the views of those who object to the proposal before any final decisions are made and I would urge them to send their views to us so that they can be considered.”

Last week, the council's cabinet pressed ahead with the plans, despite it being referred back to the authority's top brass by the education scrutiny committee, who called the plans "flawed".

You can also send your objection in writing by emailing education@powys.gov.uk or via post to the Interim Chief Education Officer, Powys County Council, Powys County Hall, Llandrindod Wells, Powys, LD1 5LG.
