NEWTOWN Football Club legend Brian Jones will be honoured at Latham Park.

Club chairman Howard Ellis confirmed plans were already underway to honour the first player to ever score at the ground who died earlier this month and will be laid to rest on Friday.

A private funeral will take place but the funeral cortege will be leaving the ground at 1pm for all who wish to pay their respects to one of Newtown's most beloved sons.

Brian, or BF as he was popularly known, won a Welsh youth cap and would go on to play in goal and as a forward for his hometown club.

In 1951 he scored the first ever goal for the club at Latham Park following their relocation to the ground which has since gone on to become one of the best in Wales.

In 1955 he was part of the Welsh Amateur Cup winning side and famed for netting 56 goals in one season.

In retirement he stayed involved with the club as youth team coach and also became an active member of the town's St Giles Golf Club.

Club chairman Howard Ellis said: "On behalf of everyone at Newtown Football Club our heartfelt condolences are offered to Brian's family.

"BF was a club legend and everyone who ever met him only spoke well of him. He was a true gentleman and much loved son of Newtown.

"The club will make a dedication to Brian in recognition of his career when we can once again welcome fans back the ground."
