Coronavirus vaccinations will get under way in Llanidloes and Caersws next week.

Arwystli Medical Practice will carry out vaccinations on patients aged 75 and over from Tuesday, January 26.

"We are absolutely thrilled, and so ready to go," practice manager and town councillor Margot Jones told Llanidloes Town Council. "We're very excited about it. It's just great news for Llanidloes."

The practice will be getting 300 doses delivered on Friday and a further batch next week.

"We are thrilled to be starting on Friday, and we will do our absolute best to get this vaccine out as quick as we can," Cllr Jones said.

"We are committed to working weekends, whatever we need to do ensure that the people of the area are safe."

Some patients in the Llanidloes, Carno and Llandinam areas received letters inviting them to get the vaccine at the Royal Welsh Showground, near Builth Wells. Cllr Jones said that this was an error and that some patients should have been invited to the mass vaccination centre in Newtown.

"That's obviously caused a bit of upset but we have managed to get the message around to our elderly patients to say that to keep ringing, the call centre is very busy, but keep ringing and they will swap the appointment to Newtown."

Cllr Jones also praised local care staff for their work looking after their residents during a coronavirus outbreak late last year.

"We all know the care home had a very traumatic time over Christmas, and bless their hearts they need every bit of praise we can give to them in the way those staff handled the situation they were in."

A mobile coronavirus testing unit at Cae Hafren near Llanidloes has now closed and moved to another town in Powys. Powys Teaching Health Board said that since Saturday, January 16, a testing units have been relocated to Llansantffraid-ym-Mechain and to County Hall in Llandrindod Wells.
