POWYS has been home to many mysterious incidents over the centuries.

Following alleged evidence of pumas stalking the hills of Snowdonia, the County Times has looked back at one of the more famous incidents in Powys.

During the late 1980s sightings of large cats and dogs began to surface.

In 1989 dozens of sheep were killed near Clyro during the summer with witnesses claiming to have seen a 'Gwyllgi' - a black hell hound.

However the most famous incidents occurred near Rhayader during a two month period between September and December 1988.

Sheep were viciously attacked by an unknown creature who became known as the Beast of Bodalog.

Sheep were always found dead having suffered a single bite to the sternum which had caused massive blood loss before finally being devoured by the mysterious animal.

The attacks terrified the townspeople of Rhayader, all the more after experts ruled out a large cat with no prints or hairs found.

Such fears grew all the more when trails were found which appeared to have been made by some kind of serpent.

The trails began on the banks of the River Wye and circle around the prey before returning to the water.

By December, 35 sheep were dead and as quickly as the attacks had happened they ceased and the mystery of the Beast of Bodalog remains to this day.
