A MAN was arrested on suspicion of drink driving following a serious accident just outside Newtown in the early hours of Thursday morning (January 14).

The accident occurred just after 5am on the Newtown to Tregynon road, where a Vauxhall vehicle had crashed into a telegraph pole, bringing it down. The driver, a 28-year-old male, made off from the scene before police could arrive but he was tracked down and later arrested.

A Dyfed Powys Police spokesperson said: “We were called to a single vehicle crash on Llanfair Road, Newtown, at shortly after 5am on Thursday, January 14.

“A Vauxhall had crashed into a telegraph pole, bringing it down, before the driver had made off.

“However, the driver, a 28-year-old male, was located sometime later and arrested on suspicion of drink-driving. He has since be released under investigation.”

The road was closed while the pole was moved and reopened at 10.45am.

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called shortly after 5am this morning, Thursday, January 14, to reports of a single-vehicle road traffic collision on Penshaw Lane in Newtown, but were not required to attend.”
