A FORMER professional goalkeeper for Liverpool and England has teamed up with a Deeside-based goalkeeping coach to support young keepers during lockdown.

Chris Kirkland joined junior goalkeepers for a free Zoom question and answer session organised by Ben Wynne of Ben Wynne’s Goalkeeper Coaching, from Connah’s Quay.

Kirkland, who made over 280 appearances across the Premier League and Championship, answered questions about his career and discussed the importance mental health and wellbeing during lockdown.

It was the latest free online session provided by Ben Wynne, who has taken his coaching online to ensure budding goalkeepers can continue to train safely throughout the pandemic.

The Zoom calls, which offer free live skill sessions followed by Q&A discussions, have also seen Dan Watson, first team goalkeeper coach at Northampton Town, join to discuss his career in football, with ex-Everton and Wales keeper Neville Southall set to speak next Monday 19th January.

Ben Wynne said: “The pandemic has of course impacted all young footballers’ training massively, and during the latest lockdown I knew it was important that junior goalkeepers stay engaged with the game, which is why we started our online sessions.

“The insight from Chris Kirkland was fantastic, as he’s a goalkeeper who has played at the highest levels and knows what it takes to get there. He’s also a mental health advocate, and gave some great advice to help protect wellbeing during the pandemic.

“Chris is also hoping to come down and join in a session in person following lockdown, which will be an invaluable experience for these youngers to train with a former professional.

“The online Zoom sessions have been a great success so far, and once it’s safe to do so I’m looking forward to returning to my weekly sessions and half term camps, based at Wepre Park in Connah’s Quay.

“Anyone with an interest in goalkeeping is welcome to join us by contacting our Facebook, Twitter or Instagram pages.”
