A fire that tore through a barn at a farm near Trefeglwys on New Year's Eve was accidental, Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service has said.

Crews from Llanidloes, Newtown, Llandrindod Wells and Montgomery arrived at the farm to find around 50 tonnes of straw which was well alight shortly before 9am on Thursday, December 31.

Firefighters removed the straw from the barn using farm machinery to allow it to burn in the open air before dampening down the remaining hotspots using two hose reel jets.

Crews also isolated the water and electric supply to the barn.

Photos shared on Instagram by firefighters at Llanidloes Fire Station show smoke billowing out of a livestock building, piles of straw burning inside the barn, and a telehandler moving straw on fire to a nearby field.

A spokesman for Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said crews left the incident almost seven hours later at 3.41pm.
