Plans to build a new £12.9 million primary school in Newtown are to be sent to the Welsh Government for approval.

Powys County Council has today given the go-ahead to submit plans to build a 270-place all-through school that will replace the current Hafren and Ladywell Green school buildings.

Building Ysgol Calon y Dderwen would be 65 per cent funded through the Welsh Government's 21st Century School Programme, while the remaining 35 per cent would be funded by Powys County Council.

If the plans are given the green light, the school would be developed alongside a new 'well-being campus' which would provide health and social care services on one site.

Earlier this month, Councillor Phyl Davies, Cabinet Member for Education, said: “The existing school buildings are not suitable to meet the needs of a 21st Century curriculum or meet the well-being needs of pupils.

“As part of our Vision 2025, we are committed to providing world-class facilities. We believe that our plans for the new primary school in Newtown not only show this commitment but we will be providing facilities that the children deserve.

“If the Strategic Outline Case is approved by the Welsh Government, it would represent another huge investment in our school infrastructure.”

The new school, Ysgol Calon y Dderwen, will open in September 2021.
