I was fortunate enough – thanks to my parents and to the serendipity of where I happened to live – to attend Welsh-medium primary and secondary schools.

Sadly, unless Powys County Council changes its strategy (and fast) not one of my own four children will enjoy the benefits of Welsh-medium secondary education.

Powys County Council is still operating under the misguided idea that dual stream schools work. They don’t.

Attainment in Welsh amongst pupils in English-medium streams is no different to that of pupils in English-medium schools.

If we are serious about creating bilingual, dare I say it, multilingual children, the only way of so doing is to invest in Welsh-medium schools.

My father was raised as an English speaker. He recognised that he had missed out, learned Welsh and wanted his own children to become confident Welsh speakers.

Fortunately, more and more parents are coming to the same conclusion.

Please can Powys County Council deliver on its previous promise and open Welsh-medium secondary schools in north Powys or does it have no ambition for the children of this county and no desire to right the linguistic wrongs of the past?
