AVID runners in Rhayader won’t let the Covid-19 pandemic stop them from entering one of the town’s iconic annual races later this month – while raising money for an organisation close to their hearts.

The Elan Valley 10-mile Road Race is one of Rhayader Running Club’s famous competitions, which has been held every November for over a decade. And members and non-members alike are preparing themselves to take part in this year’s race, albeit a race with a twist, as it will be run virtually on either Saturday or Sunday, November 21-22.

Just like we’ve seen with the London Marathon this year, local runners must run a 10-mile route of their choice, anywhere locally or anywhere in the country.

Entrants can submit their time using one of the myriad running apps available. Entry costs £5, plus a small 50p admin fee. All the money received will be donated to Rhayader St Johns Ambulance who have been an essential part of all the club’s races for decades.

Tony Davies says it’s the club’s way of helping out a vital service at a difficult time when they’ve continued to serve the local community and beyond.

“With no events going on this year we thought they were a great cause to get behind,” said Tony.

“Rhayader St Johns Ambulance were at our first Elan Valley race which is 11 or 12 years old and they’ve been at every 5km race and Round the Lakes race since the start.”

As well as the Elan Valley event the club is famous for its 5km Race Series and Round the Lakes runs – which have been held since the late 1980s.

“St Johns have been to every single one and have been a pivotal part of Rhayader Running Club events for decades, so to show our appreciation all the entry money received will be donated to this fabulous local charity,” added Tony.

“And hopefully next year the race will be back in the Elan Valley with the superb team from St Johns looking after us.”

Around 200 runners turned out to the 10-mile race last year and after successful virtual 5k events earlier in the year, Tony is confident numbers will be similarly high for the end of the month.

“As well as raising money for St Johns it’s a great opportunity for us,” said Tony.

“We did it for the 5k series in May and June which was great and it’s a great way to be sociable in an unsociable way.”

All runners will be required to comply with the relevant Covid-19 rules for their area and apply social distancing and give priority to pedestrians.
