A village church near Newtown is to close after struggling to raise enough money to secure its future.

St Cynon Church council has announced "with huge sadness" that the building in Tregynon will close.

In a statement, the church council said: " For many years, the church has struggled to raise enough money to ensure its future, and with falling numbers of members combined with the restrictions faced this year, the council have had to take this difficult decision."

They hope that the church will become a 'Pilgrim Church' in order that a limited number of services such as marriage blessings, funerals, concerts, meetings, community events as well as private prayer can carry on every year.

A Remembrance Sunday (November 8) service will be held at the war memorial from 10.50am where only up to 30 people will be able to attend owing to coronavirus restrictions.

Residents from the village and surrounding area are encouraged to decorate a stone with a poppy and leave them in the church porch, before they are placed around the war memorial for Remembrance Sunday.
