RHAYADER residents have been busily preparing for Remembrance Day with a host of displays throughout town for people to see.

Remembrance benches commissioned by Rhayader Town Council last year and made by the talented Nick Buchan have been decorated ahead of Remembrance Day.

This year the town council have taken Nick's lovely craftsmanship and brought it to life with a splash of colour and black metal covering.

The benches are to be repositioned in the town; one in Rhayader and one in Cwmdauddwr. Rhayader Town Council would like to thank Mid Wales Welding for their work on the benches which have been very well received by the community and will be well used.

Rhayader WI members, meanwhile, have created a stunning display, made from a total of 680 poppies that were knitted, sewn or crocheted by 18 members, with a few ladies assisting in the design of the display while two husbands and a friend helped construct it. The display is to thank the town’s fallen heroes from many conflicts.

Owing to Wales’ second lockdown that came into force last Friday the decision was made to put the display up early.

In other news, the town council will be holding a service at the war memorial on the morning of Remembrance Sunday, November 8.

County Times:

Due to coronavirus restrictions and current Welsh lockdown guidelines it is only possible to hold a closed event with 30 individuals. To make the service safe and lawful, representatives of local groups and veterans have been invited to take part and lay wreaths.

The town council are asking that anyone else who wishes to lay a wreath or crosses does so at a time that will not clash with the closed event.

“We appreciate this is not ideal but we must take this action to ensure our community is kept safe,” said a spokesperson.

“We invite the whole community to stand on their own doorstep at 11am and observe the two-minute silence.”
