Three names for a new primary school in Newtown have been revealed.

Hafren Junior School and Ladywell Green Infants School pupils came up with more than 130 different names for their new school which will merge within the next 12 months.

Governors met last week to discuss the names and whittled them down to three. And now they are asking the community for their opinions online.

The shortlisted names:

Ysgol y Dderwen (English: School of the Oak)

Ysgol Calon y Dderwen (Heart of the Oak School)

Ysgol Glan yr Afon (School on the Riverside)

In a post on Facebook, Hafren Junior School said: “There were common themes around many of the suggestions, namely the river that runs along our school boundary and the great oak tree that stands proudly in our grounds and on the logo of both our current school uniforms.

“I think you'll all agree that these are strong names which reflect our unique position in open, green space, at the heart of our town and on the picturesque banks of the River Severn.

“Names were shared with staff and children before we broke up and we will gather their thoughts over the next week when they return to school.

“This is an incredibly exciting time for all involved and many thanks to you all for your continued support through each step.”

A new English-medium primary school for pupils aged four to 11 on the current sites will open on September 1, 2021. It is estimated the merger will save Powys County Council £131,885 a year.
