Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council has announced that it aims to live stream this year's Remembrance Sunday event on the internet.

Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, only up to 30 people will be allowed to attend the "much shorter" formal ceremony at the Cenotaph and Memorial Green on Sunday, November 8.

A wreath laying service will still go ahead and will be attended by Montgomeryshire MS Russell George, the Mayor of Newtown Cllr David Selby and representatives from local organisations such as the Scouts, Royal British Legion and Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service.

Town council clerk Edward Humphreys told councillors on Monday: "Whilst we're not encouraging people to attend the ceremony, we do acknowledge that some people want to observe the ceremony. It means a great deal to them.

"Even if they do not attend, or can't attend for Covid reasons, they might be able to participate by watching the live stream."

The live stream can be viewed on the town council website and Facebook page.

What will happen on Remembrance Sunday?

10.30am - Town representatives will gather at the Cenotaph and Memorial Green on New Road.

10.45am - Ceremony will start and a few words will be said by The Rector of Newtown, Reverend Canon Nia Wyn Morris and the Mayor of Newtown Councillor David Selby.

10.50am - Live stream will begin.

10.55am - Police officers will close New Road, Shortbridge Street and the road alongside Clifton Terrace to traffic for around 10 minutes.

Shortly before 11am - Newtown Silver Band will play the Last Post, and the exhortation read by the Royal British Legion.

11am - Two-minute silence is observed followed by the Reveille, and then the Kohima Epitaph is recited.

11.05am - Roads reopen followed by the wreath laying service.

11.20am - End of event.

"Clearly, this is not a normal year," said the town council clerk. "I am very grateful to the Royal British Legion, Reverend Nia, Silver Band and the Neighbourhood Policing Team who have all come together to make the best of what could have been a very difficult job.

"Remembrance this year will not go unmarked."

Will I be able to attend?

Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council said it does not encourage people attending the event, and neither can they prevent it.

"We can't prevent people from walking down the street and stopping to observe but we wouldn't want to encourage it," the town clerk added.

"There may be people there, and it's up to them to take responsibility for their own safety outside of the memorial garden and on the streets."

What about Armistice Day?

At 10.45am on Wednesday, November 11, there will be a shorter ceremony organised by the Royal British Legion that will last around 20 minutes. The Mayor and town councillors will attend as representatives of the community. Traffic won't be stopped by police officers.
