Organisers of the Bishop’s Castle Christmas Lights Switch-on have cancelled the festive event due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Virtual events will instead go ahead which include a video of the Castle Carols, an online Bishop’s Castle-themed Advent calendar, competitions and music.

Bishop’s Castle mayor Grant Perry confirmed the news and latest cancellation of an event due to the ongoing global pandemic and lockdown restrictions.

The decision follows the latest UK government announcements over social distancing restrictions.

He said: “Following the recent changes in government guidelines and regulations the organising committee of the Bishop’s Castle Christmas Lights have reluctantly been forced to cancel the proposed switch–on event this year.

“The lights and Christmas tree will still be installed and lit up as usual but without the formal switch-on and accompanying side shows, displays and stalls.

“It is hoped that Santa can still make an appearance either in person or via Zoom.”
