A MEDICAL practice that serves the Llanidloes and Caersws communities has warned patients that there is no stock available to offer extra flu vaccination appointments.

Arwystli Medical Practice has revealed it is under “severe” pressure to meet current demands while keeping the community safe amid ongoing pandemic and lockdown restrictions.

Margot Jones, practice manager, said: “We understand that the shortage is frustrating but please do not take this frustration out on our reception staff.

“Our practice staff are here to help you, our aim is to be as polite and helpful as possible.”

A surge in demand for the vaccine has been triggered by the coronavirus outbreak.

The practice had placed an order for vaccines in January in time for this year’s flu season.

Mrs Jones added: “We were able to order a small quantity later.

“However, the quantity of stock the practice purchases is dependent on patient numbers and the percentage uptake in the previous season.

“As stocks are ordered so early we were unable to plan for Covid, and the additional cohorts added to this season such as families of shielding patients not in any at risk category or over 65 and also vaccines for the over 50s, nor were we able to predict the additional demand from the usual cohorts.”

She added: “At the present time our flu vaccination appointments are being rapidly taken.”

Meanwhile practice patients have been asked to treat all staff members with “respect and dignity”, and any aggressive behaviour, shouting and rude language will not be tolerated.

Mrs Jones asked for patience, saying: “We can assure you that every effort is being made to provide the best service possible.

“We are working with the Health Board and Public Health and will inform you as things change.”

The medical practice is adopting new ways of working such as walk through clinics in Llanidloes and Caersws.

Arwystli Group Medical Practice has been based in the area since 1975, and its team of five GPs look after 8,500 patients.
