TWO councillors from south Shropshire want to see action taken at road junctions that they say are highly dangerous and where there have been fatal accidents

Heather Kidd, Shropshire councillor for Chirbury and Worthen, is demanding urgent action over safety measures at the scene of a fatal accident after a year of inaction by Shropshire Council.

“At the Folly Junction on the B4386, visibility is very poor when you are coming from the Chirbury direction and there have been numerous accidents here over the years,” cllr Kidd said.

“A person died here in July 2019 and representatives from the parish council and I met officers from Shropshire Council at the junction on August 1, 2019.

“We agreed on a number of measures to improve safety here including new white lining and signage which is re-sited and is also not misleading as it is now.

“After a lot of chasing up by me – we did receive a plan in January 2020 but nothing has happened since.”

She said that despite attempts including by the local parish council nothing had been done

“We now have a situation where vegetation has grown up around the junction again and the road markings have totally worn away,” added the councillor, who has been the Liberal Democrat candidate for Ludlow in General Elections.

She is not the only councillor in south Shropshire to call for action at a dangerous road junction where there have been deaths.

Vivienne Parry, Shropshire councillor for Ludlow south, has been campaigning for improvements to be made at the A49 junction at Woofferton adjacent to the Salwey Arms where there have been a number of accidents, some of them fatal.

Mrs Parry wants to see the junction redesigned and a roundabout.

She believes that this work needs to be a priority.

The calls come just a week after councillors hit out at the lack of notice over road repairs in the Bishop’s Castle area.

Nigel Hartin, Shropshire councillor for Clun, said: “An increasing number of road repairs are occurring at the ‘drop of a hat.’
