This year's holidays may have been a bit of a Covid-related washout, but we would all still love a good break before the year is out.

And while restrictions make travel less tempting, there are still plenty of places to stay on our own doorstep.

This Sunday marks World Tourism Day, so we've taken a look at travellers' favourite places to stay in Powys – maybe it will inspire you to take a short break in one of the beautiful corners of our own county.

Here's the top five hotels within Powys, as ranked by users of the TripAdvisor website.

5) Elan Valley Hotel, nr. Rhayader, 4.5 stars

A family-friendly hotel within range of the mosty beautiful sights of the Elan Valley.

"It's a perfect location for the Elan Valley Visitor Centre and indeed the whole area," wrote one online reviewer. "Hospitality was second to none. Evening menu is limited at present but excellent steak and chips. Would certainly recommend this place to stay and eat."

4) Maesmawr Hall, Caersws, 4.5 stars

A timber-framed 16th century beauty which is retains many of its original features, and is popular with couples getting married.

"We've stayed at Maesmawr Hall several times over recent years and we're very pleased to say it hasn't descended into the usual corporate 'makeover' that is all too common these days," says one user.

"It still retains its charm, character and originality. However, with the Covid 19 precautions that have to be observed, tweaks have been be made with considerable effort going into making guests feel safe within the lounge area and restaurant – and they've succeeded."

3) The Royal Oak, Welshpool, 4.5 stars

One of the most handsome and prominent buildings in the centre of Welshpool, and a popular spot for eating, drinking, and sleeping.

"The hotel is a lovely quaint building with old period features," writes one reviewer. "The staff were so welcoming and friendly with a particular mention for Chris the landlord and especially Mandy on Reception who was so kind and helpful."

2) Caer Beris Manor Hotel, Builth Wells, 4.5 stars

A lavish manor set in 27 acres of parkland surrounded by the River Irfon.

One reviewer said: "Extremely friendly staff, excellent food, whether breakfast or evening meal, and in a beautiful location with grounds you could spend a very enjoyable time walking around, especially the wobbly bridge!"

1) The Lake Country House and Spa, Llangammarch Wells, 4.5 stars

A four-star country retreat which, as the name suggests, is a place where you can unwind and enjoy various spa and health facilities – as well as on-site fishing and golf.

"The venue is gorgeous, the spa has adapted incredibly well under the current pandemic circumstances," says one enthusiastic visitor. "Lovely walks around the grounds for us and for dogs. Gorgeous interior everywhere, rooms are large and spacious. We’ll be back for sure."
