A WOMAN who wounded a man after throwing a glass object in a crowded pub has been given a suspended prison sentence.

Katy Rose, 23, of Penygelli Mill, Kerry, pleaded guilty to wounding after throwing the object at Thomas Vaughan in the Castle Vaults pub in Newtown, on February 2.

Appearing for sentencing at Mold Crown Court, Rose was given a nine-month prison sentence, suspended for a year.

Maria Masselis, prosecuting, said it was 2am when the victim was at the bar area of the pub drinking with friends.

He had little recollection of the incident other than he was struck to the head, but the bar manager had witnessed an argument between the victim and his friends, and Rose and her friends in the build up.

Rose became more agitated and the bar manager was concerned the argument would turn physical but before door staff could move in, Rose threw either a bottle or a glass in an "overhand motion", which cut Mr Vaughan on the head.

Ms Masselis said the incident happened so quickly that the assault was unclear on CCTV, but the footage showed that in the build-up the victim was gesturing towards Rose and her friend, there was a verbal exchange and Rose was becoming irate.

Mr Vaughan was left with a laceration which could be permanent but declined to provide a victim impact statement.

The incident took place in the Castle Vaults pub

Simon Rogers, defending Rose, pointed to a positive pre-sentence report and glowing references on her behalf, adding that she was of previous good character.

He said the incident was as a result of provocation caused by insults from the victim and his friends towards her friend.

Mr Rogers said: "She is remorseful. Nothing can excuse this defendant's behaviour that night.

"She was upset because of the way the complainant behaved towards her friend, comments were made, and sadly in remonstration with him this defendant lost her temper.

"In the heat of the moment, in the face of provocation she acted entirely out of character. She doesn't attempt to minimise her actions.

"Her references speak highly of her, she is caring and clearly has a social conscience."

Recorder Simon Mills drew back from sending Rose to custody.

He said: "You impulsively threw an object, a bottle or glass it does not matter, which struck Mr Vaughan's head causing a nasty wound.

"It's a really dangerous thing to do, throwing a glass object in a crowded pub."

As well as being given the suspended prison sentence, Rose will also carry out 200 hours of unpaid work.

There was no order for costs or compensation were made by the court.
