The Welsh Government is supporting a natural flood management project in Guilsfield with £67,624 in grant funding.
The money will be used to prevent further flooding near Guilsfield Brook.
Homes have been subjected to flooding due surface water run-off combined with a construction caused by the nearby Montgomery Canal.
A Powys Council spokesman said: “This project is in its infancy and the funding is for the first stage of the project, which is to start appraisal and design work as part of the project. This will include details drawings, designs and costings for future capital works.
“The council and Severn River Trust will work with other organisations, in particular landowners, the Local Flood Action Group, local community councils and the Canal & River Trust during the design stage.”
