A BUTTERFLY garden is to be created at a village cemetery near Newtown.

Kerry Community Council has been awarded a grant to provide residents with a space to enjoy nature and boost wellbeing.

The project is part of the £5 million ‘Local Places for Nature’ fund from the Welsh Government.

The butterfly garden will be situated in Kerry Cemetery near St Michael’s Church and be installed by Bridgen Contracting, who maintain the cemetery on behalf of community council. Local councillors will also have practical support from Keep Wales Tidy.

A Kerry Community Council spokesperson said: “Unfortunately, due to Covid-19 regulations we have not been able to include members of the community working on this project.

“As the cemetery is open to the public and therefore accessible to all who are visiting the cemetery or out walking. We are hoping to create a colourful, peaceful place that will enable nature to thrive and also serve as a memorial garden providing those visiting graves of loved ones to be able to sit/ rest.”

The new butterfly garden is expected to be completed by late October.
