An 'amazing' brand new sports facility has opened in Newtown.

The multi-use games area (MUGA) on the Treowen estate opened on Thursday (August 20) during a small ceremony attended by residents, committee members and local politicians.

Newtown East county councillor Joy Jones had the honour of cutting the ribbon before showing off her basketball skills.

Regina Buckley-robins, committee chairperson, thanked the National Lottery Community Fund for helping with the grant adding that "without it, we would not of been able to build it for the community".

Ms Buckley-robins also thanked the committee who have worked together to get funding and oversee the work.

Former Newtown mayor Cllr Val Howard, who attended on behalf of Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council, described the new facility as "amazing".

A spokesperson for Treowen Community Hall said: "This resource is excellent for our community and to see the children and adults take part in sport activity made all the hard work worthwhile.

"It was great to get feedback and as committee members went home a group of five young lads who live on the estate and who had been phoning to ask when it would be opened, turned up to play basketball. So, watch this space in the future.

"Many thanks to the committee members for their support, most work so couldn't come. We hope to hold an official event opening when Welsh Government allows."
