These stunning night-time photos capture sinister storm clouds glowing yellow with electrical charge as dozens of stars twinkle serenely overhead.

The photos, taken on the edge of the Brecon Beacons, show a clear night sky overhead, dotted with hundreds of bright stars.

But just below the constellation of stars stretches a blanket of ominous clouds, illuminated in orange and yellow tones as a lightning storm flashed through the sky in the distance.

The amazing weather was captured by keen amateur photographer Karl McCarthy, 51, between 10pm and 11pm on Tuesday night.

Karl said: "It was an amazing sight to see, it was very surreal.

"The lightning storm was taking place about 75 miles away from where I was, over the Midlands.

"But the skies were so clear and starry over our part of Wales, we were able to see the lightning lighting up the sky all the way from here.

"I've never seen a storm like that before. The lightning just kept flashing for ages, it was almost constant.

"So many people ended up gathered on this mountain road, a lot of them in their pyjamas, just to watch it."

Karl said he had been hoping to catch a glimpse of the Perseid meteor shower in the clear night sky – but that the distant storm was just as "amazing" to watch.
