FOUR friends completed a gruelling 100-mile charity cycle in memory of an ex-serviceman and the founder of Llandudno Jazz Festival.

Ed Burke died on Monday, January 14, 2019 aged 44 after a battle with cancer. He received care at St David's Hospice.

Wishing to raise money for the Llandudno based charity - which cares for patients across Conwy, Gwynedd and Anglesey - Adam White, Tom Burke, Chris and Stuart Williams completed the hilly challenge which took in a five-and-a-half mile route around Llandudno's headland.

The quartet cycled Marine Drive 18 times in one day.

During the ride, more than 20 cyclists and two runners joined the friends en route. Supporters also cheered them along the way.

Adam White, physical trainer from Rhos on Sea, said: "This was the first of many challenges to remember my friend. Ed loved pushing his limits and thrived at the thought of an uncomfortable challenge. He would quite often enter events with little or no preparation and still perform well which was quite annoying.

“We saw the first-class care Ed received from St David’s Hospice during his short stay there. Remembering Ed and supporting the Hospice is something we are truly passionate about.”

The group raised more than £1,600 for the hospice.

Adam added: "Considering my preparation was minimal, I found the lack of conditioning the challenging part. The long hill was always tough and the wind at the top of the climb gave it another dimension.

“Rather than recognising the discomfort I was experiencing, I would use that time to reflect on how the funds raised would help those at the Hospice.”

James Wilde, Conwy Area Fundraiser at St David's Hospice, said: "It is an amazing effort by all.

"The Great Orme is very steep and unforgiving in places and to have the stamina and determination to complete it and time again is astonishing.

"Well done to all involved, it’s a fundraising challenge to be very proud of."
