A-LEVEL results day in Warrington will look a little different this year as social distancing rules mean the usual celebrations have been put on hold.

A-level pupils will collect their results tomorrow, August 13, with a variety of coronavirus safety precautions put in place by sixth forms and colleges.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, students were not able to sit their exams, so grades have been awarded based on a combination of their mock exam results, classwork and assessments.

These grades, calculated by teachers, will be moderated by the exam board depending on how the school has performed overall in recent years.

This process caused major controversy in Scotland last week, with students in less affluent areas being marked down more harshly than those in richer places.

But individual students will not be able to directly challenge their grades to the exam boards - they will be dependent on schools and colleges to appeal against results on their behalf.

Many sixth forms and colleges in Warrington are making use of time slots when students collect their results, to safely monitor the number of people in the buildings.

For example, Barrow Hall College at Great Sankey High School has assigned classes different entrances and time slots to aid social distancing.

Some are also offering the option to view results online or have them emailed for students who do not feel comfortable attending in person.

For those hoping to attend university, Ucas’ track system, which shows whether universities have chosen to accept students based on their grades, will update at around 8am tomorrow, Thursday.

The grades awarded this year should be treated the same way as in previous years by universities, colleges and employers.
