Prime Minister Boris Johnson has sent a video message of support on the first day of the virtual Royal Welsh Show.

Speaking from 10 Downing Street, the Prime Minister said he was "very sad" that he can't be at the showground in Llanelwedd in person.

"I think the last time I was with you I promised to come back again and I said I would," Mr Johnson said. "But unfortunately owing to the current state of the pandemic we can't do it in the way that we want to."

The short video message was posted on Twitter on Monday by Secretary of State for Wales Simon Hart MP who said the Prime Minister has "always been a huge supporter" of the Royal Welsh Show.

Mr Johnson last visited the showground in November when he trimmed a sheep and served beef and lamb baps as he got stuck into country life at the Royal Welsh Winter Fair.

Mr Johnson added: "If we all follow the rules, if we all decide to work together to beat the virus in the way that we have, and in the way we have been doing, then I have no doubt that succeeding years will see fantastic Royal Welsh Agricultural Shows and ever greater Royal Welsh Agricultural Shows and I look forward in joining you in person myself".

The Royal Welsh Agricultural Society thanked Mr Johnson for the "lovely" message.

"We look forward to welcoming you here again in the future to enjoy all the agricultural community has to offer".
