A young swan was rescued from the Montgomery Canal after it was savaged by a dog.

The Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust shared a photograph of the injured cygnet in order to raise awareness of the damage dogs can do if they're let off their leads and not properly looked after by their owners.

"Some people just seem to have a blind spot when it comes to their four-legged friends and this is the result," the Wildlife Trust said.

The Montgomeryshire Wildlife has warned owners to keep their dogs on leads of they could lose the privilege of walking their pets in the beauty spots altogether.

The charity said: "There are always going to be some places that are too sensitive for canine visitors, but aside from those, there should be no reason why your furry family members cannot stay with you, if you are responsible. We need to think more about how our actions affect others and by that, I mean not just humans, but all life.

"We ask that people keep their dogs on leads on our nature reserves because the sites and wildlife are sensitive; many birds nest on the ground and in some cases, we really need the disturbance of all visitors to be kept to the path.

"But, it's not just that – badly behaved dog owners can negatively impact on livestock grazing and the enjoyment and wellbeing of other visitors. Not to mention the fact that bad behaviour can lead to restrictions which then affects everyone."
