A YEAR after he passed away, a group of George Davies’ best friends, from in and around Welshpool, are taking on the UK Three Peaks in his memory.

The challenge, which they’ve named ‘Mind Over Mountain’, is to raise money for two important charities: Cruse Bereavement Care and the DPJ Foundation.

“As a group of George’s friends and family, we have chosen to do this to raise awareness for mental health, particularly in men, and support the work of some incredible charities,” the group said.

George Davies, who grew up on a family farm in Forden and worked at Coed-y-Dinas, died on September 26, aged just 28.

“We miss him dearly. He has left behind many friends and a loving family, including his niece and nephew who adored him,” the fundraiser said.

“George was a truly amazing person, he had a natural charm about him and carried that cheeky grin no matter what life threw at him.

“He wore his heart on his sleeve and was nothing but a loyal friend to everyone who knew him.

“He was as caring as he was generous.

“He’d be the first to buy you a pint if you didn’t have one and would make anybody and everybody feel welcome.

“He was the life and soul of every gathering; if he wasn’t making you cry with laughter, he’d be up to something mischievous.”

Now his friends are fundraising in his memory.

The two charities the hikers will be raising money for both link back to George and his family.

Cruse Bereavement Care have supported George’s sister over the past year and the DPJ Foundation provide mental health support specifically for the farming community.

The group aim to raise £5,000 by climbing three peaks within 24 hours.

They only launched the GoFundMe page on Monday but they’re already not far off that target: being just shy of £4,000.

“This is no easy challenge but we are ready to embrace it in memory of George. We miss our mate dearly, and this walk is trying to embody everything we loved about him.”
