SIX legal firms are taking part in a joint scheme during July and August in which people can make a will and donate to a Wrexham hospice at the same time.

Nightingale House will receive half the cost of writing the will as a donation and the solicitors will receive the other half of the fee in return for their work.

Delyth Underwood, in memory giving fundraiser at Nightingale House said: “A will is an opportunity to make your wishes clear and at a time when your family may be in distress.

"The pandemic has sadly raised people’s awareness of the necessity of putting their affairs in order.

“On January 6, 2018, Mark Evans suffered a stroke at home. He was 47-years-old.

"After ten long weeks in hospital, Mark recovered well enough to return home learning to walk and talk again.

"Sadly two weeks after returning home, Mark’s condition deteriorated and he was re-admitted to hospital when he and his wife Gayle received the news that he had a brain tumour.

"Mark passed away peacefully at Nightingale House on December 17. He hadn’t left a will.”

Praising the support received from the hospice Gayle Evans said: “Mark was admitted to Nightingale House Hospice for five weeks of symptom control and pain management after having had a routine MRI scan which showed that the tumour had grown.

"It was only a matter of time. Mark came home from the hospice on October 1 and we tried to make the most of our time together but I was trying to be both wife and carer.

"Mark was scheduled to return to the hospice for a week at the end of November.

"This time was a godsend for me as the hospice clinical team were able to take care of Mark and I was able to feel like his wife again.

“The care Nightingale House Hospice provided was second to none.

"The staff are absolutely amazing and they make you feel at home.

“Mark hadn’t left a Will and due to his condition, didn’t have to chance to write one.

"If you put things in place and let your wishes be known when life is good, it will give you peace of mind and let you ‘live your best life’ I hope people will take the opportunity to take part in this scheme.”

It will cost £120 plus VAT for a single person’s will or £180 plus VAT if a couple each want to make an identical will.

The price covers the cost of a basic will. Anything more complex or for instance a Lasting Powers of Attorney will be quoted for separately. The donation is eligible for Gift Aid.

The person's will outlines their wishes and tells everyone what should happen to their money, possessions and property after they die.

A will can also help reduce the amount of Inheritance Tax that might be payable on the value of the property and money a person leaves behind.

Lisa Jones from GHP Legal, one of the firms taking part in the will writing scheme said: “We are delighted to be supporting the Nightingale House Hospice Will Power campaign.

"The hospice provides such fantastic care and treatment to patients in our local area, and we feel it is vitally important to support this cause.

"The scheme is one way in which our legal expertise in preparing wills for clients can provide vital fundraising for Nightingale House Hospice whilst also promoting the importance of making a will”.
