AMID the flash flooding that hit Welshpool earlier this week, there was also a report of a "goose or swan" being killed by a lightning bolt.

As thunder and heavy rain struck the town on Monday, there were also reports that a majestic bird may have been struck dead during the electrical storms.

A poster on the Welshpool Melting Pot community Facebook page, described seeing an upsetting incident.

On Tuesday, Sian Bailey posted in the group: "Who is the best person to contact regarding a dead bird? Possibly a swan or goose.

"Unfortunately I witnessed the animal get struck by lightning during the late afternoon storm yesterday. With it being the other side of the canal and torrential rain I couldn't see what bird, but it was large and white. Flying about six foot off the ground.

"The bird is still in the field today, the first bridge, by the canal boats."

Another rare occurrence in the stormy weather experienced in Powys this past week was a tornado which was seen by residents on the outskirts of Brecon.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents says that between 30 and 60 humans are struck by lightning in Britain each year - of whom three are killed.
