Faster trains, more regular journeys to Birmingham, and links with HS2 are among the ambitions for the future of transport set out in an ambitious economic growth plan for Mid Wales.

The Growing Mid Wales document looks at various aspects of the economy, including a key set of proposals for transforming transport links through Powys.

Among the ideas put forward is a suggestion to improve the Cambrian line to allow trains to run faster on the route between Aberystwyth and Shrewsbury.

The document also suggests introducing a full hourly service to Birmingham International.

And it proposes helping local links to London with "extension of the Heart of Wales Line and selected Cambrian Main Line services to Crewe for connectivity to HS2 / Manchester Airport."

It also proposes using the Cambrian line for lightweight rail freight.

On the roads, the document proposes "addressing cross-border strategic routes and onward connectivity".

It proposes improvements to certain roads, including cross-border routes into England on the A458, A44 and A483, within Wales on the A487, A489 and A486, and within the Mid Wales region on the A44, A470, A483 and A487/A486.

The document reads: "Reliable, resilient, sustainable and connected transport networks are fundamentally important to economic growth and communities in Mid Wales.

"Good quality infrastructure is vital in linking people up with opportunities, companies with markets and labour supply – and improving our approach in Wales to how we enable and invest in infrastructure is widely recognised.

"Enhanced transport connectivity will play a critical role in supporting economic flows, improving accessibility, attracting investment and enabling development."
